About Paints

What Does Paint Consist of?

To answer this question, we say that there are various main materials that make up the paint. They are: binders, pigments, fillers, additives and solvents.

The binder is the basic medium which is known as the bearing medium or the sticking material. This is a chemical polymer which main function is to help the paint stick to the surface to be painted, to bind the various components of the paint together and to make the paint glossy.

The basic function of the pigments is to give the paint its required color. In addition, in protective paints, pigments help in the prevention of rust or corrosion.

The fillers are materials normally consisting of calcium carbonates or talc and it has many functions such as helping the basic color in covering, reducing the transparency of the binder, helping in hardening the paint coat and reducing gloss.

The additives are of several types and they have different functions, such as facilitating drying, dispersing of the pigments in the binder, prevention of scaling, molding, skinning and sagging, increasing the hardness of the paint coat and reducing gloss.

If we want to classify paint in accordance with the way it dries after application, there are four types.
  • Paints which dry by air as a result of oxidization, such as various oil paints.
  • Paints which dry by air with the effect of evaporation only, such as various lacquer paints and emulsion paints.
  • Heat paints which do not dry or harden unless subjected to a specific temperature (heat drying).
  • Paints which dry by chemical interaction only
