Painting Techniques

Sponging Off
Related but quieter technique, which creates a subtle and softly dappled surface.

Base CoatNational Vinyl Silk Glaze:National Special Effect , Water.

Steps:
  1. Apply the base coat and let it dry, 2 days.
  2. Mask the walls, ceiling, and baseboard adjacent to where you will begin. Mix the glaze and pour some of it into the paint tray. Dip the sponge in water; wring it out thoroughly.
  3. Using the foam brush cut the glaze into the corner where you will begin; also cut for 18" along the ceiling and baseboard. Load the roller with glaze; remove the excess with curved painter's tool. Roll two roller widths of glaze from top to bottom; release as needed. Move the roller in a wavy path along the leading edge.
  4. Pounce the sponge on the wet glaze and then blot the sponge on a rag. Repeat, working in 2 x 2' sections and removing the glaze in a loose spiral pattern.

  5. When the sponge stops removing the glaze, rinse it in water and wring it out. Because the clean sponge will remove more glaze, resume pouncing in an unobtrusive area, such as toward the baseboard.
  6. Pounce over the same area, rotating the sponge lightly on the wall, removing more of the glaze and filling in the spiral.
  7. Repeat to complete the wall.

Tips:
  • Do not try to remove the glaze from the corner on one pass when you being. Instead, work in and out of the corner as an extension of your spirals, scrunching up the sponge so you can dab it into the corner to remove the glaze. Or use a small sponge.
