Problem Solving

Foaming / Cratering

Formation of bubbles (foaming) and resulting small, round concave depressions (cratering).
Cause:
  • Use of old or low quality paint.
  • Applying paint too rapidly, especially while rolling.
  • Excessive rolling or brushing of the paint.
  • Shaking a partially filled can of paint.
Solution:
  • Use of high quality paint because the bubbles break while the paint is still wet.
  • Avoid excessive rolling.
  • Apply a proper primer.
  • Apply gloss or semi-gloss paints with a short nap roller.
