Problem Solving Cracking Cause: Application of a topcoat before the undercoat is dry. Application of an extremely hard, rigid coating, like alkyd enamel, over a more flexible coating, like a latex primer. Solution: Remove old paint by scraping and sanding the surface. Prime the surface with high quality latex, then paint with top quality latex paint.
